Tactics

Enhance mentoring & professional development

FSU is refining and extending its comprehensive system for mentoring assistant and associate professors while continuing to expand professional development workshops and programs for all faculty.

Better mitigate issues affecting faculty retention

Efforts to increase faculty retention include broadening faculty leadership opportunities, expanding sabbatical leaves, addressing strategies for partner hiring and by recognizing and supporting faculty interest and affinity groups

Set expectations and mechanisms that increase faculty excellence

Faculty excellence in teaching, research and service is central to the university’s preeminence. FSU is increasing our efforts to recognize faculty excellence through the expansion of our Extraordinary Accomplishments Program, adding opportunities for innovative pedagogy and resources to redesign curricula, establishing faculty service awards, and the reinstatement of a Named Professorship Program.

Activities and Accomplishments

  • FSU researchers received a record level of funding from federal, state and private sources in the 2020 fiscal year, bringing in over 250 million to the university to support investigations into areas such as health sciences, high energy physics and marine biology. This is a $17 million increase over the prior fiscal year.
  • In the past year, FSU doubled the number of professional and leadership development opportunities for faculty, including two cross-institutional leadership programs.
  • Nine faculty received Fulbright Scholar Awards for 2020-21, setting a record for FSU.
  • The Leon County Commission honored Vice President for Research Gary K. Ostrander with a proclamation celebrating his years of service to Florida State University and the local community. Ostrander is stepping down from his position at the end of December to return to the faculty and spend the next chapter of his career fully focused on his research endeavors. Laurel Fulkerson will serve as interim Vice President for Research.
