Diversity and Inclusion

Increase Global and Cultural Competencies in the FSU Community

The number of students enrolled in global and cultural courses was negatively affected by the pandemic.

Metric Chart: Number of Students Enrolled in Global and Cultural Courses. 2023 Goal: 100% Increase. 2017-18 academic year baseline: 536. 2018-19 academic year progress: 930. 2019-20 academic year progress: 1,010. 2020-21 year progress: 480. 2021-22 academic year progress: 861. 2022-23 academic year goal: 1,072.

Tactics

Increase participation in intercultural activities

FSU will encourage the growth of students taking courses and engaging in co-curricular activities that expand their understanding and appreciation of global and cultural opportunities and by recognizing their commitment to being engaged citizens.

Increase participation in international studies

FSU seeks to expand upon its role as a national leader in international study by increasing participation in Study Abroad and by increasing the number of incoming and outgoing students in exchange programs.

Market the effects of international experiences on student success

Whereas there is a common recognition of the value of internationalization/globalization, FSU’s goal in this initiative is to become a leader in identifying the impact of these activities on student success and the internalization of intercultural competencies.

Activities and Accomplishments

  • FSU received a prestigious Platinum Level Institutional Award for Global Learning, Research and Engagement from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) in 2018, recognizing its efforts to offer international educational experiences.
  • Florida State University’s rich history of supporting internationalization was recognized nationally in a new report by representatives from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education. The university’s study-abroad programs rank No. 9 in the nation in Open Doors annual report released November 16, 2020, which included a category documenting the number of students studying abroad.
  • In 2020, 9 FSU faculty and 9 FSU students earned Fulbright awards, making FSU one of only 20 universities in the nation recognized as a Fulbright Top Producer in both faculty and student awards. Fulbright Scholars teach and conduct research internationally as part of the program.
  • Two hundred students earned the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society distinction with ‘international’ as one of their engagement areas in 2019-2020, up from 113 in 2016-17.
  • Florida State University doubled the number of students engaged in enhanced global learning through the Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) in fall 2020 by expanding its Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) partnership. Already working with The Technology College of Americana (FATEC) in Brazil, FSU is now collaborating with two other FATEC campuses in São Caetano and Praia Grande.
