Tactics

Incentivize industry-sponsored research

FSU has the expertise and opportunity to grow industry-sponsored research by increasing matching grants but also by promoting and leveraging existing skills of its research faculty and through synergistic leveraging of new interdisciplinary collaborations.

Create and expand collaboration with industry partners

The student success initiative at FSU is focused on increasing experiential and formative learning experiences, including Entrepreneurship-and-Innovation-themed internships and co-op opportunities for students. This effort is aided by incentivizing faculty to engage in more industry collaboration and increasing corporate partnerships. We are also focused on promoting our student, faculty, staff and physical resources as valuable commodities for industry, governmental and higher education research and innovation partnerships.

Incentivize, support, and promote innovative and entrepreneurial activities within the faculty and staff

FSU incentivizes and supports curricular and pedagogical innovation to enhance students’ learning experience. We also focus on increasing faculty and staff commercialization of their inventions and innovations. FSU encourages faculty and staff participation in E&I incubators and maker spaces like the FSU Innovation Hub and the DOMI Station while looking to expand the number of venues and mentoring, funding and collaboration opportunities with colleagues and students.

Activities and Accomplishments

  • The University increased incubator spaces used for business, concept development and other entrepreneurial activities by 774% (from 2,046 to 17,872 square feet), due in large measure to the opening of the Innovation Hub.
  • In recognition of his decades-long contributions to the biomedical field both through academia and the corporate world, Assistant Vice President for Research Eric Holmes has been named to the National Academy of Inventors. Throughout his career, Doctor Holmes has written 93 peer-reviewed publications and patented 23 technologies — 21 of which were licensed to drug companies.
  • FSU Center for the Advancement of Teaching continues to assist faculty in improving curricular design and student learning strategies by publishing weekly pedagogical tips and hosting numerous curricular innovation sessions. The number of faculty who participated in the course design doubled and the number of courses that implemented learning assists programs increased by 25%.
  • In the past fiscal year, the amount of industry-sponsored research dollars doubled.
